Fly Fishing

One of the greatest fly fishermen that ever lived was better known for his prowess in another sport...baseball.  His name was Samuel Theodore Williams but he was called Ted.  He played left field for the Boston Red Sox and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first opportunity.

Ted's first love was fly fishing.  He had unbelievable eyesight and hand-eye coordination.  He could drop a lure into a bait bucket from 50' away.  He took many people fly fishing during baseball's off seasons.  An article by Curt Gowdy remembers Ted as being an incredible guide, and a fine handler of fish once they were on his line.  Gowdy said Ted talked to the fish but is language was unprintable.

The hand-eye coordination that made him a expert fly fisherman undoubtedly led to his success as a baseball player.  He hit for an average of .406 in 1941 and no one has reached the .400 range since.  Ted was also a Marine Fighter Jet Pilot in WW2 and was then recalled for the Korean War.  During aerial gunnery school, he broke all records for accuracy.

Ted Williams will be long remembered for his baseball feats, but keep in mind, he was outstanding in two other fields, no mean feat.
