So You Want To Fish For Trout?

A lot of information is available for those anglers that are experienced and avid in our sport.   There is very little information about trout fishing for those who are just beginning.  Where did those grizzled fisherman get there experience?  There was no internet for them to surf in order to get information.  My guess is there was a friend or family member that was a trout fisherman and was patient enough and cared enough to get them started.  Let’s try to give out a few tips and techniques that might  help those who are just beginning have some success early in their fishing ventures so they won’t give the sport up due to failure.  If you follow some of these techniques you will be on your way to becoming one of those veterans yourself.

Use these tips  while wading in your favorite trout river or stream. Actually, as a beginning trout angler you should realize rivers and streams are the best places to begin your trout fishing apprenticeship. Of  course you can fish for and catch trout in lakes and ponds. The trout in these bodies of water are almost always stocked by fish and game departments poor examples of the native trout.  To a true trout fisherman fishing in a stocked pond would be like shooting sitting ducks.  That would be no fun at all. The stocked trout  are a man-made replica of natures beautiful creature.

Putting aside my personal biases, the bottom line is these tips for beginners will make anyone more successful. They will help get youstarted on the right foot. Now, are you ready to get started?

  1. Dress properly.  Wear drab clothing - The water where trout live is always cold and clear and these intelligent fish are highly aware of their surroundings. Therefore you don’t want to wear any clothing that makes you stand out. If anything appears out of the ordinary to these wily creatures, they tend not to bite. This is especially true with the larger more experienced trout. After all, that is how they have survived thus far.  The bottom line is to not wear or do anything that will make you “stand out”.
  2. Organize your gear - Since you are a beginning trout angler, when fishing in rivers and streams, you want to be as organized as possible. This means wearing the proper utility vests to carry all of your fishing gear and tackle. Most people think of fishing vests are being for fly fishing, but they are limiting themselves.  Vests can be used by spin fishermen as well. Fishing vests have a ton of pockets for all of your trout fishing gear, and everything is hanging on your body for easy access on the water. Things like retractors and bait bags can be added for even more convenience. By being organized you can concentrate on your line in the water (where the trout are) rather than searching for gear, lures, and or bait.
  3. Use The Right Type of Bait and Gang Hooks - One of the best baits to use for trout is live worms, and when when using live worms gang hooks are a must. Gang hooks are the best way to deliver live worms in a natural manner. You see, a set of pretied gang hooks will enable a live worm to appear in an outstretched and completely natural manner. When it comes to trout fishing, especially for beginners, this tip will absolutely get you started on the right foot.

These tips will help make you a more productive trout angler. There is also no substitute for spending time  practicing your craft where you will use it, on the water The more time you spend on the water trout fishing the better off you will be, sooner than you expect to be, you’ll be an expert trout angler instead of a beginner.
